A HALF HOUR ANIMATED VERSION OF WAGNER’S CLASSIC OPERA In 1993 six different directors were chosen by S4C to animate a condensed version of famous operas; Turandot, Rigoletto, The Magic Flute, The Barber of Seville, Carmen and Rhinegold. The intention of the Animated Opera series was to bring opera to new, young audiences in a fresh and accessible way. This half hour animated version of Rhinegold, the first opera of Richard Wagner's massive 16 hour 'Ring Cycle' formed part of S4C and BBC Enterprises Animated Opera series. Based on Icelandic lore, Rhinegold is an epic tale of the lust for power in the mythical world of gods, giants, dwarves and underwater maidens. Wagner's Rhinegold proved to be a challenge with its complex plot and treacherous characters. The music by the Welsh National Opera was recorded at Swansea.
